RM of Grant’s story
The Rural Municipality of Grant No. 372 incorporated on December 13, 1909. Its office is in Vonda, and the municipality surrounds the town of Vonda along with the localities of St. Denis and Smuts.
Much of the area's early story is told in its churches and farm buildings, four of which are now designated heritage properties. Holy Trinity Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church was built in 1924 by Theodore Yanow and is still used as a church. Near Smuts, immigrants from the Borshchiv and Morodenka regions of Ukraine built St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in 1926.
Another group of immigrants, from the Borschiv region of Ukraine, built Ss. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, known as the Bodnari Church, in 1936, eight kilometres east of Smuts. The fourth heritage property is Robert and Adele Schmidt's double hip red barn, built in 1917.
